Making Sense of Maps and Data

2020 - 2021 - Leventhal Map and Education Center - Collaborators: Garrett Dash Nelson, Belle Lipton, Missy Hill, Tess McCann

As part of their initiative to support the public working with geospatial data, the Leventhal Map and Education Center (LMEC) at the Boston Public Library (BPL) spear headed building social and technical infrastructure for informed data consumption in conjunction with their new Open Data Portal. As a Public Data fellow, I took part in developing and teaching a free three-course session targeted towards K-12 teachers and adult library patrons about gathering, interpreting, and using data. We ideated that this would not be just another course in map-making, but one in properly understanding and evaluating datasets and maps to affect change.
